At the heart of Islam is one simple truth: we are servants of Allah. This identity, called ‘ubudiyyah (servanthood), is not meant to lower us, but to bring us closer to true peace. To be a servant of Allah is to live with purpose, knowing that every act, small or big, can become worship when done sincerely for Him.
What Does ‘Ubudiyyah Mean?
The word ‘abd means servant. Allah reminds us in the Qur’an, “And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (QS. Adh-Dhariyat: 56). Servanthood is not slavery to people, but a noble bond with our Creator. It is about remembering that our strength, time, and talents are all gifts from Allah — and the best way to use them is in His service.
Serving Allah through Service to Others
One of the most beautiful ways to live ‘ubudiyyah is by serving people. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.” (HR. Tabarani). In Indonesia Syiar Network (ISN), volunteers find peace in giving their time, skills, and energy for da’wah. From designing posters to preparing events, every act becomes more than just work, it becomes worship.
Peace in Intention
True peace does not come from applause or recognition. It comes from a sincere intention. When a volunteer says, “I do this for Allah,” even the hardest tasks feel lighter. This is the secret of ikhlas (sincerity): serving without expecting anything in return, except Allah’s pleasure.
Strength in Community
Being a servant of Allah does not mean being alone. In ISN, ‘ubudiyyah grows stronger through community. When volunteers gather, pray together, share ideas, and support each other, they create an environment where servanthood feels alive. It reminds us that we are not only serving Allah as individuals, but as part of an ummah (community).
Servanthood is the essence of our faith. It is the path that transforms simple efforts into eternal rewards. In ISN, we learn that serving Allah through da’wah is not a burden, but a source of peace. Every volunteer’s consistency, every act of kindness, every smile given for the sake of Allah, all of it is a reflection of ‘ubudiyyah.
To be a servant of Allah is to be free from the need for worldly praise, and to find peace in His acceptance. May we always find joy in serving Him, and may our work in ISN be counted as steps closer to Allah’s mercy.
